Welcome to Colegio Bandeirantes' school-specific Wiki page!

We live in Brazil, an emergent country with 190 million inhabitants. The country is known for its natural beauties and the biggest example of it is the Amazon Forrest. In the last few years, we took an important role in world’s economy scenery, since in this aspect we are the 6th biggest nation worldwide. Although Brazil’s become a representative economy, we are still facing some social problems.
The same thing happens in São Paulo, the city where Colégio Bandeirantes is located. Despite the fact that this is the biggest metropolis in Brazil with about eleven million people, and it has one of the most powerful economies in Latin America, some social issues remain, like lack of basic sanitation in some suburban regions and deficit in education, health and transportation.
Our school is in the heart of São Paulo, in Vila Mariana’s neighborhood. It was inaugurated on March 1st, 1934 and nowadays it has about 2700 students and 150 teachers. It’s main goal is to develop educational processes of informing and forming students in a balanced manner, to stimulate leadership and teach the students to act in society with a critical sense, initiative, creativity, independence and social responsibility.
Bandeirantes is a traditional institution, recognized for its high quality of education and for its excellent results in exams to enter the most renowned Universities. Students who attend, come from several different neighborhoods of São Paulo, or even further. They are predominantly from upper middle class families that value good education. The school also receives students with a scholarship, through the partnership with the NGO iSMART that offers the opportunity to talented students, who come from the public schools, to finish their studies at schools that can provide them better chances to enter a good University.
Among the several concerns of Colégio Bandeirantes with its students and their formation, it is the preoccupation in forming people who are inserted in the current world. Therefore the school develops projects related to ethics and sustainability. One example is the Science Fair for Middle School and High School, which the theme this year is Technology and Sustainability. It was through this project that we got to know the Stove Project.
Stove Project interested us, for it’s partnership with MIT and USP (São Paulo’s University) and also because it’s main purpose is to solve a problem that is seen not only in countries like Rwanda, but also in Brazil.
